Dear Friends and Alumni,
I hope everyone is enjoying their summer and staying cool during the heat wave.
The school year is quickly approaching and I wanted to reach out to you with some exciting news about our recruits, schedule and upcoming alumni events.
On a personal note, I just returned from the Under 17 World Championships in Lithuania, where I served as Head Coach, and quite happy to report that we finished 5th in the world. It was a wonderful experience representing Canada on the world’s stage. Basketball is truly an international game and I came home with many new ideas and concepts.
RECRUITING CLASS
Charles (Adrian) Hynes-Guery returns home to Montreal after spending three years at American International in Springfield, Massachusetts. Adrian will bring us veteran leadership at the point guard position and business man like approach to practice. Adrian is a proven winner having led Dawson College to a National Championship before he left for Drexel University.
Christian McCue, Maine’s Mr. Basketball, joins our backcourt with a swagger and confidence that led his high school to the Maine’s Class A State Championship. Christian brings the ability to stretch the floor with his shooting and will help fill a need that was missed when Simon Bibeau went down with his knee injury.
Joseph Sykes brings his 6’7 athletic frame from Calgary, Alberta. Joe has the ability to play both the 3 and 4 spot. He will definitely create some mismatches at both positions, posting up smaller guards or driving past slower 4 men on the perimeter. He will be asked to contribute as a freshman.
Louis Van Crean joins his sister at McGill from Chicago, Illinois. Louis played in the tough high school leagues in Chicago and has the ability to shoot the ball and rebound. He needs to fill out his 6’6 frame but will be counted on to improve our lack of shooting last season.
Simon Bibeau returns from his ACL knee surgery and looks to be in great shape, just waiting for clearance from the doctor to start playing. He has passed every test for his knee and is chomping at the bit to return. All Star Tristan Renaud Tremblay is recovering from sports hernia surgery and will be ready for our pre season schedule
With the return of veterans Aleks Mitrovic, Nic Langley, and Winn Clark, as well as 2nd year Vince Dufort, Nic Yantzi, Te’Jour Riley and Ave Bross, there will be competition at every position..
EXHIBITION SCHEDULE
We are continuing our trend of playing NCAA schools in August. We will be hosting Northeastern University, Sunday August 19th at 3 pm and the University Nevada Las Vegas (UNLV), Tuesday August 21st at 7 pm. It is a great way to start our season and evaluate our young talent. Our players look forward to playing theses games and our schedule has definitely helped us in our recruiting.
Our tournaments will include the annual Redbird Classic (October 19-21), featuring Trinity Western, Ottawa and Wilfred Laurier University. We will travel to Brock University, the following week (October 26-28) and hope to see our Southern Ontario alumni and friends at our games. We have been working extremely hard to enhance our schedule and as a result we are hoping to travel to Orlando, Florida for some pre season games. Our trip to Florida will be a great lead up to our season opener on the road in Quebec City. Our Holiday tournament schedule will include a visit to Toronto and Ryerson University. Ryerson will be celebrating the opening of their new facility at the old Maple Leaf Gardens.
ALUMNI EVENTS
We are very excited about our planned alumni events. With the help of Rick and Luigi, we have come up with two events this season. Our first event will be our annual alumni game. Our alumni game will be held during the homecoming weekend, on Saturday October 13th, at 4 pm. Our theme is to mix current players with alumni and enjoy a fun filled game. Following the game, we will be hosting a reception and share stories of the memorable McGill players and moments.
We are also happy to announce that we have decided to create our own Men’s Basketball Wall of Fame. It will feature players, coaches and builders who have contributed to McGill Men’s Basketball and displayed a standard of excellence that deserves recognition. The wall will lead down our locker room hallway and will be a reminder of the excellence for all men’s basketball teams to see. We will be inducting five members this year and hosting a special night at the Molson Room, honouring the five inductees. We are looking for anyone who would like to volunteer and be part of the selection committee that will establish guidelines used in the selection. We are hoping to find volunteers from the different eras of men’s basketball to guide us through the process. Please reach out to Rick Rusk, Luigi Fraquelli or myself if you have any interest in being part of this important project.
We will be announcing our inductees during our alumni weekend. Please reserve Saturday April 13th, 2013 in your calendar and join us in recognizing and honouring of basketball excellence. It will be a great evening of fun and the beginning of another great McGill tradition.
Alumni and Friends of McGill Basketball are always welcome to visit practice and attend games. Please reach out to me and let me know when you will be attending. Also, we have been very fortunate to have some great fan support on the road and we always look forward to seeing friendly faces in the crowd.
In closing, I would like to say thank you for your continuing support of our basketball. We are excited about our upcoming year and we realize that we cannot succeed without your ongoing support. Our athletes are thankful for your generosity and will continue to strive to be their best.
Best Regards,
David DeAveiro
