David DeAveiro has been appointed head coach of the McGill University men's basketball team after a stellar career with the Ottawa Gee-Gees, where he was the team's all-time leader in coaching wins, posting an impressive  210-127 record overall (.623), including a 122-66 mark in regular-season play (.649).

The 46-year-old native of Toronto was named three times as OUA East coach of the year (2006, 2007, 2010). He also served as an assistant coach with Canada Basketball on numerous occasions, including the men's junior and senior national teams.

"We are happy to welcome a coach of Dave's calibre and experience," said Drew Love, executive director of athletics and recreation at McGill. "He is highly regarded as a strong recruiter, a tireless worker and a great teacher. His record at Ottawa speaks for itself and we look forward to him leading our team toward a national championship."

Among DeAveiro's stints as an assistant coach was with Jay Triano's staff on the national hoops squad at a 2003 pre-Olympic tourney in China, the 2007 FISU Summer Games in Bangkok where Canada won bronze, the 2008 FIBA Americas under-18 championship in Argentina and the 2009 FIBA world junior championship in New Zealand.

DeAveiro has also been invited as a guest coach by Leo Rautins for a national senior team training camp this summer.

A graduate of both the University of Ottawa (BSoc., '89) and Brock University (BEd., '92), DeAveiro spent 19 years with the Gee-Gees, including five seasons as a player (1984 to 1989), five as an assistant coach (1990 to 1995) and nine as head coach (2001 to 2010). This past year, he guided Ottawa to an 18-4 second-place finish in the OUA East, only two wins shy of the OUA champion Carleton Ravens.

DeAveiro also had an assistant coaching stint at Humber College, where the Hawks captured a CCAA national title in 2001. He returned to the Gee-Gees as head coach in 2001-02, after they had missed the playoffs for two straight years and subsequently guided them to nine straight post-season appearances, including trips to the CIS championship tourney in 2005, 2007 and 2009.

"An opportunity to be a part of a university like McGill, with its rich tradition and history doesn't come along every day," said DeAveiro of his decision to coach at McGill. "I look forward to building a program that the University and alumni can be proud of."

DeAveiro is married to Caretta, his wife of 13 years and they have one daughter (Jordyn, 12) and a son (Darius, 8).
